Many thanks to all who helped make the 2012 NATS Artist Awards a terrific competition. I was fortunate to take 2nd place again, and am honored to have been in the company of such a fine group of finalists!

The NATSAA competition kicked off the NATS convention, which means the audience was made up of hundreds of voice teachers – a discerning and incredibly supportive crowd! Many old friends from conservatory and past gigs and new friends from SongFest were in attendance, which made the weekend feel more like a reunion than a stressful competition. I had the great pleasure of catching up with my very first voice teacher, Joan Boytim and her husband Jim. I also had the good luck of having my present-day voice teacher Elizabeth Daniels on hand for support and last-minute tweaks – a real godsend!

My final program was:

No Word from Tom . . . I go to him from Stravinsky’s Rake’s Progress (yes, the whole thing!)

Quelle Aventure! from La Courte Paille by Francis Poulenc

Un poète disait from Clairieres dans le ciel by Lili Boulanger

Var det en dröm? by Jean Sibelius

The Christmas Song by Lee Hoiby

I had the time of my life singing this fantastic music with my collaborator Joy Schreier, pianist extraordinaire and true friend. It was an experience I won’t soon forget. Thanks to all who sent good wishes toward Orlando – they worked!
